Do you often find yourself worried before your dental visits? Or do you always end up canceling your dental checkups because of dental fear and anxiety? Then, you can benefit from sedation dentistry. Read on our blog to learn more about sedation dentistry and its benefits.
What is sedation dentistry?
In simple words, sedation dentistry is the practice of using sedative medications to help a patient feel calm and relaxed during a dental procedure. Sedation dentistry not only makes the patient feel comfortable, but it helps minimize any pain or anxiety they may feel.
When a patient is more relaxed, dentists can perform a dental procedure more efficiently and with less pain. It also gives the patient enough time to have all of their questions answered.
What types of sedation dentistry are available?
There are different types of dental sedation available, and your dentist will choose the most appropriate one according to the patient’s dental needs and the procedure.
The different types of sedation include the following:
- Oral sedation: Oral sedation involves taking a pill about an hour before your appointment. You’ll still be conscious and able to respond to questions or commands, but you’ll likely feel relaxed and a little drowsy. Oral sedation is typically recommended if you’re nervous about having dental work done, or if a procedure requires more than one appointment to complete.
- Nitrous oxide:Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is a gas administered through a gas mask to help reduce anxiety during a dental procedure.
- Intravenous (IV) sedation:IV sedation is a method of sedation dentistry that puts you completely to sleep. IV sedation is completely safe, as the medication is administered directly into your bloodstream through a vein. IV sedation is sometimes referred to as “conscious sedation” because it allows you to remain awake throughout the procedure, but you are completely relaxed and comfortable. With IV sedation, your dentist can complete multiple procedures at once, so the time you will spend in the dental chair will be significantly reduced.
During your appointment, your dentist will administer sedation and monitor your vitals throughout your procedure until you’re completely comfortable. We also offer general anesthesia for patients who suffer from severe dental anxiety.

Sedation dentistry is a wonderful option for those who suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia. Sedation dentistry is also beneficial for patients who need multiple procedures done but who would prefer to do them all at once.
