Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop in your mouth and are often too small or positioned incorrectly. These issues can impact your dental and overall health. Many people have impacted third molars. Stockton Creative Dental will monitor your wisdom teeth’s growth, position, and health, and advise you if extractions are necessary.

Why Are They Being Removed?

Wisdom teeth usually emerge in late adolescence or early twenties. Because they are located so far back in the mouth, wisdom teeth may not naturally erupt. The other 28 adult teeth are usually in place by this time, leaving little room for the wisdom teeth to grow properly. Insufficient space causes wisdom teeth to emerge at an angle or partially.

Impacted wisdom teeth grow in this way. The pain they produce can be caused by them becoming lodged in your jawbone or gums.

When Is Removal Necessary?

When wisdom teeth cause problems or X-rays show that they may in the future, they must be extracted. Other reasons include:

  • Damage to other teeth: Having an extra set of molars can cause your other teeth to shift, causing mouth pain and bite issues.
  • Jaw damage: Cysts can form around the new teeth, causing jaw damage. If left untreated, they can hollow out your jaw and damage your nerves.
  • Sinus issues: Wisdom teeth can sometimes cause sinus pain, pressure, and congestion.
  • Inflamed gums:Tissue around the affected area may swell and become difficult to clean. This may cause pain and other difficulties.
  • Cavities:Swollen gums can form pockets between teeth, allowing bacteria to grow and cavities to form.
  • Misalignment:Impacted wisdom teeth can cause crowding of other teeth and even necessitate treatment to straighten other teeth

Still do not want to give up your molars? You can request that your dentist describe what they see with your teeth. In many cases, you can postpone your decision for several months to see if things change. However, if you have pain, swelling, or a bad odor near your back teeth, visit your dentist.

Seeing your dentist regularly, regardless of the state of your teeth, can help you avoid many situations in the future. A healthy dental routine will keep your mouth healthy and pain-free.
